When the influential American conservationist Aldo Leopold canoed down the Colorado River delta to the Gulf of California in 1922, he was awestruck by endless wetlands teeming with wildlife. Leopold vowed to never return, fearing that the wilderness wouldn’t live up to his memories. He was right: After the U.S. government repeatedly dammed the river over the next few decades, the water slowed to a trickle and much of the lush habitat became a salt-caked wasteland. (1)
Nothing will even be like the first time.
Everything fades with time.
Except the memory of that very first time…
The first time you drove your first car…
The first time you fell in love…
The first time you saw your children…
The first time you cried with desparation…
The first time you thought about philosophy…
The first time you thought about God…
What did YOU think the first time about your life, about the cosmos, about the universe?
Hold that thought.
It is the truest thought you have made.
