Free Blogging Advice: Migrate blog outside US

Blogging is great.

Writing your ideas and sharing them is great.

So why risk everything?

Why host everything in a platform based on a specific country? Especially when lately this country has illusions of grandeur and is heading towards war with the entire world? Wouldn't you sleep better if you knew that your precious blog posts, all those things you put so effort in writing all those long nights, are safely published somewhere else as well?

In the previous Free Blogging Advice article, we show how you should backup your blog. Now comes the moment to actually post that blog somewhere else than the usual US-based platforms!

Important note: I really like the US-based platforms and have been using them all my life. To be honest, I believe they are the best, although I admit my judgement could be clouded by the simple fact that I have never used something else. Blogger and WordPress (US-based) have been my choice for decades now. You are reading this in WordPress anyway.

But keeping your options open is always a clever move. One can never be too careful, especially when it comes to your valuable intellectual property. Posting your content in a diverse portfolio of platforms is good not only as a mitigation of the possible risk of one platform failing or closing (remember the case of Google Knol), but it can also help you develop your audience even further.

I asked a non-US AI agent, DeepSeek, to find me alternative options for blogging in non-US platforms. I refined the results with options that are free and offer options to migrate an existing blog to this new platform.

Here are some options:

1. Blogger by Google (Non-US Hosting Option)

  • Origin: US-based, but you can use a custom domain hosted on a non-US server.
  • English Support: Yes.
  • Migration Tools: Allows you to import content from other platforms (e.g., WordPress) via XML files.
  • Free Plan: Free hosting on Blogspot, but you can redirect to a non-US domain.
  • Websiteblogger.com

2. Overblog (France)

  • Origin: France-based.
  • English Support: Yes.
  • Migration Tools: Supports importing content via RSS feeds or manual copy-paste.
  • Free Plan: Free to use with basic features.
  • Websiteoverblog.com

4. Jimdo (Germany)

  • Origin: Germany-based.
  • English Support: Yes.
  • Migration Tools: Supports manual import of content (copy-paste or upload files).
  • Free Plan: Free to use with basic features.
  • Websitejimdo.com

5. WordPress.org (Self-Hosted)

  • Origin: Open-source software (you can host it anywhere).
  • English Support: Yes.
  • Migration Tools: Offers robust migration tools and plugins (e.g., All-in-One WP MigrationWP Import).
  • Free Plan: Free software, but you’ll need to choose a non-US hosting provider (e.g., Hetzner in Germany, OVH in France).
  • Websitewordpress.org

6. Ghost (Self-Hosted)

  • Origin: UK-based.
  • English Support: Yes.
  • Migration Tools: Offers migration tools for WordPress and other platforms.
  • Free Plan: Free to self-host, but you’ll need a non-US hosting provider.
  • Websiteghost.org

7. WIX (Israel)

  • Origin: Israel
  • English Support: Yes.
  • Migration Tools: Offers migration tools for WordPress and other platforms.
  • Free Plan: Free.
  • Website: wix.com

As you can see there are some options available. From all the above, I selected three:

Webnode: A platform that is Czech-based and offers free blogging services. It looks lean and professional. What is more, it seems easy to set up and use.

Overblog: A platform that is based in France and supports blogging in English. Has many capabilities, including monetization, and also offers easy migration of a WordPress blog.

Wix: It seems easy to use and modern. Seems like a very good option.

Soon, I will start trying these two options and I will keep you posted on how well it goes!

Until then...

Keep blogging!

Keep writing!

Keep being your self! 🙂
