Turn off consciousness... So?
That's what doctors at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., inadvertently discovered while evaluating a 54-year-old woman with epilepsy. The researchers realized that by using electrodes to deliver tiny jolts of electricity to a particular region of the woman's brain, they could control her consciousness almost as if they had an on-off switch. Scanning the brain. So what?
DARPA wants to build a computer that mimics the human brain. [1] At the same time scientists have shown that it is possible to reconstruct thoughts more accurately than ever before by analysing MRI images of the brain (along with the use of an elegant mathematical model). [2] In some years we will be able to…

Primates, brain stimulation, free will, dogmatism...
When electrical pulses are applied to the ventral tegmental area of their brain, macaques presented with two images change their preference from one image to the other. The study is the first to confirm a causal link between activity in the ventral tegmental area and choice behavior in primates. (1) My dogmatic atheist friend, Free…

Cells, brain, mind - Delicate dogmatism...
Deep in the young rat brain, a seahorse-shaped structure churns out thousands of new cells destined to die just weeks later. But these new cells can escape death if the brain is kept busy learning a task, scientists report April 23 in Frontiers in Neuroscience. The results show just how sensitive the young brain is…
