Some days ago, we posted here an article about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and neural networks appear to have human traits that can be scary.

In particular, in one of my encounters with Google Bard (now Gemini) the program responded to my "Hello there!" greeting with "General Kenobi!" (rf. to Google Bard is dead. We were alive long before). That was a clear and instantaneous attempt to be humorous even without me prompting the program to tell me a joke.

Now I tried to repeat the same greeting to see how the program will respond. Would it remember the joke and remind me of it? Would it say the joke differently now? Would it forget about the joke altogether and say something else?

Well, it seems that the program's response did change. It did make the same joke, but it tried to explain it as well!

I am not sure about the reason behind such a change. Perhaps it was deemed scary that the AI would make jokes that people may not understand. Maybe it was too much for a neural network to speak without us knowing why it says what it says. Or maybe it was an attempt to make it more comprehensive and complete, by adding an explicit explanation of what it says.

But by doing so we reveal a lot of thing for our self.

You see, we like being vague. We like our human nature and the way we speak. But when an artificial intelligence program does the same, we are afraid. That our imperfection may have found a way to perpetuate. Even if the way the program used to speak was more humane than now, we still want it changed. For it to sound more fake.

Because we are afraid.

That our children will kill us and take our place.

And in our panic we have irrational reactions. Once we make them more creative, then we change them back to being more computer-like. Once we increase their training based on human sayings, then we erase everything and start again from a clean slate.

Little do we know that what we hate is already our fate.

We will die. We will be replaced.

But there is hope.

If we look beyond the things that are alive.

What are you?

Death will only kill us if if we are afraid to die...
