Chernobyl, Kara Sea, life…

For more than a decade, Western governments have been helping Russia to remove nuclear fuel from decommissioned submarines docked in the Kola Peninsula, the region of Russia closest to Scandinavia. But further east lies an intact nuclear submarine at the bottom of the Kara Sea, and its highly enriched uranium fuel is a potential time bomb.

On the western flank there lies a closed military zone – the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. It was where the USSR tested hydrogen bombs – above ground in the early days. Besides K-27, official figures show that the Soviet military dumped a huge quantity of nuclear waste in the Kara Sea: 17,000 containers and 19 vessels with radioactive waste, as well as 14 nuclear reactors, five of which contain hazardous spent fuel. Low-level liquid waste was simply poured into the sea.

Norwegian experts and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are satisfied that there is no evidence of a radiation leak – the Kara Sea’s radioisotope levels are normal.

WHAT?

SAY AGAIN?

Once more: “Norwegian experts and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are satisfied that there is no evidence of a radiation leak – the Kara Sea’s radioisotope levels are normal”.

This strikes as odd when you first hear it. But isn’t the same thing that hapenned in Chernobyl? For years now we think the area surrounding Chernobyl is void of life due to the ecological “disaster”.

But this is how Chernobyl looks like now:

Yes, Life always finds a way to prevail. It is one of its intrinsic characteristics – it is like life is just the default path from which everythings passes through.

As for the “disaster disaster!” pseudo-ecological screams that terrorize us? Well, I can guess of some reasons. But I would be too harsh to write them down…

Stay cool. Be alive.

We are not so powerful so as to destroy life.

Only our selves…

Afrika, lions, fake ecology…

A report says that West African lions on verge of extinction. The UK-based conservation group LionAid says as few as 645 lions remain in the wild in western and central Africa. [1]

But why want to keep them alive?

For all the WRONG reasons of course…

We want them alive so as to see them in documentaries from the safety of our couch. We want them alive so that we can gain money from the zoos in which we will keep them. We want them alive so that we can have them as pets (yes!). NOT because we are ecologists. NOT because we love nature.

Let us be true. Let us kill all lions.

BP, Deep Horizon and the “we must do something” mania of Western people…

If the 4.9 million barrels of oil that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico during the 2010 Deep Water Horizon spill was a ecological disaster, the two million gallons of dispersant used to clean it up apparently made it even worse! According to new research from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes (UAA) of Mexico, the substances used for “cleaning” made the oil 52 times more toxic! [1]

It is once more proven – in a tragic way – that our “technologies” do not have the result we expect. Our assumed “progress” in many levels is shadowed by our full ignorance of the balance of Nature.

If we left things as they were, everything would be better.

As Feyerabend said, this “we must do something” way of thinking of all Western people will destroy us… It is very weird for us to understand what other cultures (e.g. in Africa) have as standard: that sometimes you must just wait and do nothing instead of “doing something”. This is what astonished white people going to Africa to rule the black people, but it is a really good way of solving things once you get to the bottom of it. As Christ very well put it: God cares for the sparrow. Do you think He will not take care of you?

(Έχει ο Θεός)

Nature has a way of putting things together and bringing balance after a disaster. Every human effort to restore “balance” is based on a very peculiar “balance” we understand and which has nothing to do with how things work in the cosmos…

“Artificial”, “Natural”, conventions conventions conventions…

Grand Canyon balance restored with artificial floods…

The Colorado River flooded the Grand Canyon on Monday as part of an ongoing experiment to rebuild beaches and restore fish habitat in the iconic Arizona gorge. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar was on hand to open the river outlet tubes at the Glen Canyon Dam in an attempt to clear out the hundreds of millions of tons of sediment that settled at the bottom of the river thanks to the massive concrete barrier. The programmed flooding (which is now planned to be executed every year) is expected to restore the natural balance of the Canyon by providing the all too valuable sludge to the ecosystem, along with additional fresh water. [1, 2]

ARTIFICIAL floods to restore the NATURAL balance?

It sounds weird… And a little bit paradox as well…

Maybe the balance restored is not so “natural”… Or maybe the floods conducted are not so “artificial”… We ARE part of Nature after all, aren’t we?!?

Geneticaly modified mazel in Mexico. Argument against ecology.

A heated debate is conducted regarding the planting of a vast area of Mexico with Geneticaly Modified crops of mazel. In particular, seeds from DuPont and Monsanto are to be planted in an area of about 2,500,500 hectares – an area about the size of El Salvador. [1] Should we change the nature of plants to fit our needs? Surely technology of agriculture has saved millions of lives from starvation. But is this “ecological”? Can we conduct changes in such a scale without first thoroughly testing what we do? Well… On second thoughts, WHY NOT? Why should we wait for years of tests when people die every day?

Ecology is good as long as it remains in the philanthropical gala level…

Anything else beyond that is ruled by harsh reality…

And if Genetically Modified seeds is not “ecological”, then surely “dying human children from starvation” is not “ecological” either.
